The St Maries
River Railroad is owned by the Potlatch Lumber Co. and is headquartered
in St Maries, Idaho. When the St Maries was formed in May of 1980 it operated
on the ex-Milwaukee Road line from Avery to Plummer, ID. Historically,
Plummer is where the freight of the Milwaukee Road continued west while
the passenger trains went to Spokane. St Maries River Railroad also kept
and maintained the branch line from St Maries to Elk River, Idaho via
Bovill. It was there that it met and traded cars with the Washington Idaho
& Montana RR (BN), with their connection to Potlatch, Palouse and eventually
via BN to Spokane and the coast. Unfortunately, the WI&M line was severed
by the floods of '96. Since the time of the floods the line was taken
over by the Blue Mountain/Palouse River Railroad. There are currently
no known plans to rebuild the connection to Bovill from Potlatch. The
washouts of '96 in effect severed any connection with the BN at Bovill.
The line from St Maries to Avery was removed in 1987. With the Avery Logger
making it's last run in November 1984.
