The company
began its fleet development with the acquisition of ten airslide-covered
hoppers purchased from the Soo Line Railroad. Following a repair program,
the infant fleet was leased to a local flourmill. With its primary interest
in the grain industry, Southern Illinois Railcar Company seized every
opportunity to increase its fleet by taking advantage of disposition of
railroad equipment. An opportunity for managing railcars for investors
brought with it the potential to add new cars to the growing fleet. Thus
began the process of developing a management company while expanding the
size of the fleet.
