Nestled amid the cane fields and citrus groves of South Florida is Florida's largest and busiest short line railroad, the South Central Florida Express, Inc. Since its purchase on Sept. 17, 1994, by its largest customer, United States Sugar Corporation, USSC, the railroad's traffic has grown 32% from 41,000 carloads to 54,000, while operated track miles grew from 103 to 174, a 69% increase. Gross revenues jumped from $4.6 million in 1994 to $8.4 million in 1998-almost a twofold increase. SCFE serves customers at 26 locations along its line. Principal commodities hauled are cut cane, bulk raw sugar, packaged and bulk-refined sugar, all types of fertilizers, molasses, LPG, pulpwood logs, rolled paper, farm equipment, and various other products.
