MR operates
freight service from Mt. Shasta to Burney, CA, 77.7 miles. A branch extends
from Bartle to Hambone, CA, 19 miles. Connections are made with the UP
at Mt. Shasta and with BNSF at Hambone, CA. Rail is 75-90 pound and the
maximum load limit is 263,000 pounds. Traffic is outbound lumber, forest
products and diatomaceous earth (used in filtering) -- about 3,000 cars
a year. The railroad was incorporated Jan. 22, 1897, and opened from Mt.
Shasta to McCloud, 17.8 miles in 1901. Regular passenger service was discontinued
in 1952. Itel sold the company's assets to 4-Rails, Inc. on July 1, 1992.
4-Rails organized the current operating company.
