The Illinois
Central Gulf, ICG, merged with the Gulf, Moblie & Ohio in 1972 to
form a mammoth system. The line from Springfield, IL, to Kansas City was
one that nobody wanted to get in a merger. The GM&O didn't want it when
it merged the Alton in 1947, but it made the line profitable anyway. The
GM&O merged with the Illinois Central in 1972 and became the Illinois
Central Gulf. The ICG let the track conditions deteriorate to a horrible
state. The ICG provided little in customer service also, driving away
buisness needed to keep the line open. As early as 1979, the ICG talked
about abandoning this line, but somehow never got around to it. In 1987,
the ICG sold the line to a new railroad, the Chicago, Missouri & Western
in a move to pair its system to a north-south core and rid itself of marginal
lines.
