The Dakota,
Minnesota & Eastern Railroad, DM&E, headquartered in Brookings, SD, is
one of the longest regional railroads in the United States. DM&E began
operations in September 1986 with track acquired from the Chicago and
North Western Transportation Co. The main line extends from the Mississippi
River at Winona, Minn. across southern Minnesota and central South Dakota
to Rapid City. In 1996, the DM&E acquired more than 200 miles of track
from the Union Pacific Railroad extending from Colony, Wyo. through Rapid
City to Crawford, Neb. DM&E currently operates more than 1,100 miles of
track in the states of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming and Nebraska.
